Around fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered multiple other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations suggest the substance was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; officials are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the public for information.
An important political figure commented the incident left him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting people of immigrant origin in 2020.
